Clubbing starts about 11 pm to midnight, running about 4 am.
The happy hour aperitifs ritual provides a fairly cheap start to the evening, from about 6 pm on, with popular, commercial and Latin music providing a club-lounge atmosphere.
All public venues are now entirely non-smoking, unless there are specially-equipped and suitably isolated parts of the interior.
The hot spots for nightlife are the Navigli canal district, Corso Como, Porta Romana; the Isola district, behind the Porta Garibaldi railway station, and the Corso Sempione area with Via Piero della Francesca.
SOME NIGHTLIFE VENUES
ABSOLUTE ICE BAR, Piazza Gerusalemme 12 (near Piazza Sempione, trams n°1-29-30). Cloaks and boots are provided, but dress up warm as temperature inside is -5°C. Walls, bars, glasses and floors are all in ice. Open 18.00- 24.00, it serves just vodka and fruit juice, with Swedish food. Open every day, booking advisable (use the website or phone 02.8907.8531).
CAFÉ’ L’ATLANTIQUE,Viale Umbria 42, (MM3 Lodi), tel. 02.5519.3925/35. A spectacular disco, pop, house, R&B, hip hop. Sunday night is the best night for meeting other ex-pats and Italians looking to improve their English.
10 CORSO COMO CAFÉ, Corso Como 10 (MM2 Garibaldi FS), tel. 02.2901.3581. Open every day 11.00-12.00. Chic bar, in the same premises as the art and fashion bookshop, art gallery and fashion store.
GATTOPARDO CAFÉ, Via Piero della Francesca 47 (tram 19, 33), tel. 02.3453.7699. Open Tues-Sun 18.00-04.00. Disco located in an ex-church, with bar in the position of the altar, dancing in the nave amongst marble columns and evocative lighting. Disco starting from 22.30. R&B, mainstream, house music. Strict entrance selection.
HOLLYWOOD, Corso Como 15, tel. 02.6598.996. Closed Mon. One of the city’s most famous discos. Door selection. Tues, hip hop and R&B, E 16. Wed, “Pervert”, gay, house music. Footballers and personalities on Sun.
JUST CAVALLI CAFÉ,Viale Alemagna 6 (entrance from Viale Camoens, MM1/2 Cadorna), tel. 02.311.817. Café owned by fashion designer Roberto Cavalli. Animal prints everywhere, chic clientele. Celebrities everywhere, typical fashion show runaway music.
LA BANQUE, Via Porrone 6 (MM1 Cordusio), tel. 02.8699.6565. Closed Mon. Smart disco very close to the Cathedral, some on the nicest interiors in the city. Live music Fri ad Sat.
PLASTIC, Viale Umbria 120 (MM3 Lodi), tel. 02.733.996. Open Thurs-Sun 22.00-04.00. Disco, transgression, avant-garde music, one of Milan’s favourite venues. Fri and Sat, house music. Sun, gay friendly. E 15-20.
SCIMMIE, Via Ascanio Sforza 49 (MM2 Porta Genova FS), tel. 02.8940.2874. A live music club, mainly jazz and blues. Performances every evening from 22.00.
SHOCKING CLUB , Bastioni di Porta Nuova 12 (in the same builing as Teatro Smeraldo, MM3 Turati), tel. 02.6575.073. The new “Blu Zone “privé is furnished entirely in blue, for a chic interior with quality music, from 02.00 on. Tues, “Fidelio”, fashion-chic, revival. Thurs, “M-style”, young people, university students, R&B/hip-hop.
TOCQUEVILLE ,Via Alexis de Tocqueville 13, tel. 02.2900.2973. Trendy discotheque near Corso Como, open 23.00-04.00 every day except Mon. The upstairs privés have been restyled and likewise the main room, which maintains the dark colours typical of an “underground” club.
